Chapter 6 Installing Windows XPThis chapter describes how to install the Windows XP SP2, 32–bitand 64–bit, operating system directly onto your server using the WindowsXP media.Unlike with Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Server 2008, you needto prepare mass storage drivers (Intel SATA AHCI driver) before installingthe Windows XP operating system and then install the mass storage driversduring OS installation. Windows XP Installation RequirementsBefore beginning the operating system installation, make sure that youhave:.Located the Windows XP media.Downloaded the latest software for your workstation.

This section documents only the steps that arespecific for installing Windows XP on your workstation.Installing the Windows XP Operating SystemCaution –The Windows installation formats the drive you designate asthe boot disk. Any pre-existing data on that disk will be lost.You have two options for installing Windows XP:.Install Windows by using a Windows CD and manually load driversduring and after the OS installation.Install Windows by using XpReburn scripts to create a WindowsCD that includes the platform and Intel SATA and RAID drivers and then usethe newly created CD to install the OS. (You must install video and audiodrivers separately.)To Install the Windows XP Operating System.Make sure that you have completed all of the requirementslisted in.Power cycle your server.The BIOS POSTprocess begins.Set the System BIOS as needed. If needed, set the System BIOSand configure disks for Intel AHCI SATA RAID. See.If you are using the optional LSI 1041E HBA, set the hard diskmode to IDE.The default mode is AHCI. If the mode was changed and you areusing SATA or RAID, set the System BIOS and configure disks for Intel AHCISATA RAID.

SATA controller is in AHCI/RAID mode, so you need to use F6 floppy disk supplied by hardware vendor. Server has USB ports and DVD drive. For some reason, you don't want to use nLite to prepare Windows XP/2003 Installation CD with integrated drivers, and you want to install from original, unmodified installation disc. From the list of available drivers, select the Windows XP drivers for your RAID or AHCI controller, and press ENTER. The drivers will be loaded, and the drives or RAID configurations will now be available as target locations to install Windows XP.

Slipstreaming drivers in to your Windows installation can either make your Windows install super simple or just make it possible. Most modern SATA and RAID controllers need specific drivers for Windows to see and use the hard drive, and with most newer computers not having a floppy drive and most unable to use a USB attached one this leaves you to only option to add the correct driver to the CD using this slipstream technique. Besides adding hard drive controller drivers so you can install windows you can also add whatever other drivers you would typically install in Windows and put them in the install.
